In response to questions regarding Scarlet Witch’s parentage in the MCU, Ian McKellen makes a comics reference. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Elizabeth Olsen reprises her role as Wanda Maximoff, ostensibly setting up the X-Men in the MCU. Given this, it’s unsurprising that long-standing questions regarding Scarlet Witch’s alleged ties to the mutants, notably her familial connection to Erik Lensherr, have resurfaced.
The Illuminati in Doctor Strange 2 was incorrect; here’s who it should have been.
Following the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Olsen was recently asked which Magneto actor she would choose to be Wanda’s father if she could choose between Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen. McKellen expressed his enthusiasm at the prospect of playing Wanda’s father after the actress chose the latter. Here’s the rest of the actor’s Facebook post:
Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart, was brought back as part of Earth-838’s Illuminati team in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Unfortunately, his time in the MCU was cut short as Scarlet Witch viciously murdered him in the same film. Regardless, it indicates that Marvel Studios is willing to bring in Fox X-Men performers to reprise their old roles in the MCU. And, given McKellen’s popularity as Magneto, it’s not out of the question that Kevin Feige and his team will want to lure him to the franchise. Even if McKellen appears in the MCU, there’s no certainty that his presence will be linked to Wanda and her lineage.
Given where Doctor Strange left things with Wanda in the Multiverse of Madness, it’s unclear where else she could appear in the MCU in the future. While it’s likely that she’ll return to the franchise sooner rather than later, her tale could develop in a way that doesn’t require her lineage to be addressed. However, if Marvel Studios chooses that path, it’s fantastic to know McKellen is open to playing her father in the MCU.
