The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, issued a subpoena to Glenn Simpson, co-founder of Fusion GPS. Fusion GPS is the firm responsible for formulating the now debunked “Trump-Russia” dossier that alleged a conspiracy of Russia working to assist in electing Donald Trump to the Presidency; a conspiracy that has yet to be remotely proven. Glenn Simpson, through his attorneys, has declared his intention of pleading the Fifth Amendment, a common theme among anyone associated with the Hillary Clinton Campaign.
The firm was originally hired in order to conduct opposition research on then candidate Donald Trump. Christopher Steele was also contracted through Fusion GPS to craft the dossier which has never been corroborated in any way, shape, or form.
Senators Dianne Feinstein(D-CA) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) announced the subpoena being issued on Friday, July 2, 2017 in which they stated, “Glenn Simpson, through his attorney, has declined to voluntarily attend Wednesday’s Judiciary Committee hearing regarding compliance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act.” They continued, “Therefore, a subpoena has been issued to compel his attendance. Simpson’s attorney has asserted that his client will invoke his Fifth Amendment rights in response to the subpoena.”
Since Fusion GPS hired a foreign agent to work on their behalf, they are required to register that agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act(FARA). Fusion GPS never filed any paperwork with regard to FARA pertaining to their contracting Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence agent. It appears for Fusion GPS Co-founder Glenn Simpson, protection against self-incrimination is a logical priority up to this point.
