In the wake of the deadly riots that took place in Charlottsville, Virginia there have been many calls to remove statues that represent or have anything to do with the Confederacy. Protesters from NYC Stands with Standing Rock and Decolonize This Place have now decided to target the Theodore Roosevelt Statue at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City claiming the statue is “racist,” along with numerous displays within the museum its self. Around 200 protesters carried signs promoting Black Lives Matter as well as opposing white supremacy as they marched inside the museum.
Theodore Roosevelt is one of four images that appear on the iconic Mount Rushmore and is known for, among many other accomplishments, for attending the GOP National Convention in Chicago in 1884. During the convention Theodore Roosevelt gave a powerful speech that compelled the GOP delegates to nominate African American John R. Lynch, whom was born into slavery but was freed under Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
Now it seems rather clear that the protesters that were involved in this particular event at the Museum of Natural History in New York City held no knowledge of John R. Lynch, which makes the entire situation so very sad. It appears that none of these protesters even took a minute to research who they were planning to protest, which leads me to question who set this group in motion in the first place.
