As schools were letting out on Tuesday Americans learned of yet another Islamic terrorist attack taking place in lower Manhattan, New York. The assailant, Sayfullo Saipov, allegedly carried out the attack by renting a truck and mowing down pedestrians on a popular and densely populated bike path, a method of attack recently broadcasted though ISIS social media channels. The assailant then exited the truck and proceeded to brandish weapons while screaming “Allahu Ackbar”, a common phrase typically cited by those whom carry out acts of terror on behalf of radical Islam. The police were forced to open fire on Saipov, injuring him and stopping the attack from proceeding any further. The terror attack resulted in the loss of 8 innocent lives and numerous injuries. Saipov is alive and recovering in a  New York City hospital. It is unclear at this point how he will be processed; as an enemy combatant or common criminal.

Sayfullo Saipov, an Uzbekistan immigrant that came to the United States through the State Department’s Diversity Visa program, is not the first terrorist to take advantage of this inane “lottery” system. Hesham Mohamed Hadayet, an Egyptian national who gained access to the United States through the Diversity Visa program, carried out the 2002 Independence Day terror attack on the LA International Airport which left two people dead and four injured.

President Trump, in the wake of the attack, has reaffirmed his calls for tougher vetting procedures and an end to the Diversity Visa Program. President Trump also called out Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for his sponsorship of the Diversity “Lottery” Visa program, a program that paved the way for 2 terrorists to murder 10 innocent people and injure many more.

The question that should be on American’s minds in the wake of this attack: Regardless of how many success stories the Diversity “Lottery” Visa program could have delivered to the United States, was it worth the lives of 10 innocent people?

Calling this program a “lottery” stands to reason; a lottery offers winners and losers. America lost this lottery as Saipov won the access and opportunity to carry out ISIS inspired attacks on American soil.
