Another vocal member of the “Resistance” has been accused of sexual assault stemming from an incident that took place in 1981, George Takei. Scott Brunton, who was 23 at that time of the alleged assault, leveled the accusations against the Star Trek icon claiming that Takei took advantage of him during a troubling point in his life. Brunton felt compelled to make the alleged assault public after hearing George Takei, a prominent member of the LGBT community, condemn Kevin Spacey for similar accusations.
Actor Kevin Spacey had numerous allegations leveled against him in the past weeks. The most troubling of accusations came from actor Anthony Rapp, which eluded to pedophilia. Spacey attempted to brush off the alleged assault with the following statements:
“I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I am beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
“This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by that fact that I have been so protective of my privacy. As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with me examining my own behavior.”
George Takei felt compelled to speak up in defense of the gay community. In the past there have been opponents to the gay lifestyle that have attempted to conflate homosexuality with pedophilia. Spacey’s statement wreaked of the same conspiracy. Takei enlisted himself to mount the defense in the following statement.
“When power is used in a non-consensual situation, it is a wrong. For Anthony Rapp, he has had to live with the memory of this experience of decades ago. For Kevin Spacey, who claims not to remember the incident, he was the older, dominant one who had his way. Men who improperly harass or assault do not do so because they are gay or straight — that is a deflection. They do so because they have the power, and they chose to abuse it.”
Takei’s accuser, Scott Brunton, clearly viewed the statement as outright hypocrisy and took his story public. Brunton’s story of the encounter was disturbing and reads as follows:
“We have the drink and he asks if I would like another. And I said sure. So, I have the second one, and then all of a sudden, I begin feeling very disoriented and dizzy, and I thought I was going to pass out. I said I need to sit down and he said sit over here and he had the giant yellow beanbag chair. So I sat down in that and leaned my head back and I must have passed out.”
“The next thing I remember I was coming to and he had my pants down around my ankles and he was groping my crotch and trying to get my underwear off and feeling me up at the same time, trying to get his hands down my underwear. I came to and said, ‘What are you doing?!’ I said, ‘I don’t want to do this.’ He goes, ‘You need to relax. I am just trying to make you comfortable. Get comfortable.’ And I said, ‘No. I don’t want to do this.’ And I pushed him off and he said, ‘OK, fine.’ And I said I am going to go and he said, ‘If you feel you must. You’re in no condition to drive.’ I said, ‘I don’t care I want to go.’ So I managed to get my pants up and compose myself and I was just shocked. I walked out and went to my car until I felt well enough to drive home, and that was that.”
George Takei has been a vocal member of the “Resistance” and often speaks out against the Trump Administration. Takei was also one of the Hollywood stars that condemned, then candidate, Donald Trump for his language in the infamous Access Hollywood tape.
Recently Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein had numerous allegations leveled against him. Weinstein was a major donor to numerous Democrats and was also a campaign bundler. Hillary and Bill Clinton both bragged about their close relationship to the alleged rapist while ignoring his blatant and well-known predatory behaviors.
Many people have found the revelations regarding the Hollywood rape-culture astonishing since many of the accused have been self-proclaimed champions of women’s rights. The proclamations coupled with the accusations, should they be true, have exposed massive amounts of hypocrisy within the industry.
As more and more members of Hollywood’s chapter of the “Resistance” become entangled in the rape culture they helped keep quiet, we can expect more shining examples of abject hypocrisy to be revealed.
