United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced a significant reduction in the U.N. operating budget for fiscal years 2018 – 2019 on Sunday evening.

Ambassador Nikki Haley announced the cut to be around $285 million which amounts to a reduction of roughly 23% of the United States’ contribution to the UN operating budget. The $285 million reduction will amount to roughly a 5.2% reduction in the overall UN operating budget.

Nikki Haley made the following statements while making the announcement:

“The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known. We will no longer let the generosity of the American people to be taken advantage of or remain unchecked. This historic reduction in spending, in addition to many other moves towards a more efficient and accountable UN, is a big step in the right direction.”

The UN operating budget is maintained separately from the UN peacekeeping budget, both of which have now been significantly reduced at the behest of President Donald Trump.

This past June under pressure from President Trump, the peacekeeping budget was also reduced by a massive $600 million going into fiscal 2018, or just over 7.5% of the overall peacekeeping budget.

These massive reduction in the operating budget comes after Ambassador Nikki Haley warned UN member countries not to vote in condemnation of the United States’ sovereign decision to relocate the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem however, they decided to ignore Haley’s warning. Though it is not clear this reduction was a direct reaction to UN members voting in the manner to which they did, it will certainly be heralded that way in the media.

The decisions to reduce the United States contribution to the United Nations marks another big campaign promise kept. For far too long the United States has been taken advantage of at the United Nations and we have continued to be the biggest contributor in every way while reaping very few benefits.

On the campaign trail President Trump promised to see an end to the United States being taken advantage of at the United Nations. With Nikki Haley executing the President’s directives in the manner to which she does, we can expect this to be a promise the President continues to drill down even further as he reigns in the UN’s perceived powers. Donald Trump seems prepared to further remind everyone that the United States leads the world, not the United Nations.
