Monday morning President Trump slammed congressional Democrats for the stalemate that has hampered progress in regards to immigration as a caravan of illegal immigrants makes its way to the U.S. border. Yes, they are currently illegal immigrants since they received no permission from the Mexican government to pass through their territories. However it appears that the Mexican government has done nearly nothing in regards to impeding the travels of the caravan.
“Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large ‘caravans’ of people enter their country,” President Trump tweeted Monday morning. “They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws…..,” the President added.
Over the weekend, President Trump aired his frustrations regarding the unfettered travels the caravan was experiencing as it made its way through Mexico towards the U.S. border. President Trump went so far as to threaten to pull out of the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA) unless Mexico does more to stop the title waves of people from illegally entering the United States.
“Mexico is doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border, and into the U.S.,” tweeted President Trump. President Trump added, “They laugh at our dumb immigration laws. They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA. NEED WALL!”
President Trump began his criticisms as news broke of a caravan consisting of thousands of Central Americans seeking to illegally enter the United States through Mexico’s northern border. There are reports of a Buzzfeed News reporter traveling with the caravan of ill-intentioned immigrants as well reports that a Washington D.C. based group named Pueblo Sin Fronteras (People without Borders) helped organize the exodus. The following excerpt was taken from www.peoplewithoutborders.org:
People Without Borders is a non-profit, Christian-based organization committed to serving immigrants and international residents of the Washington, DC Metro Area. We provide a support network and an extensive package of services which equip and empower individuals to adjust to their new life and become contributing members of the community.
People Without Borders should be criminally charged with aiding and abetting illegal entry into the United States, at the very least. What they are doing is no better than what “coyotes” to when smuggling people over the United States border. This is a flagrant, public example of human trafficking and the people facilitating it should be held to account.
Those people whom make up the caravan are claiming they seek asylum while fleeing poverty and crime in their home country. Essentially they are wishing to flee persecution however, often times we find out they are in fact fleeing from legitimate criminal prosecution in their efforts to make it over the American border.
Trump is right that these people are coming in an effort to take advantage of the DACA program. The immigrants within the caravan have only seen media reports referencing amnesty, and they seek to take advantage of that. The immigrants coming currently coming into the country have no clue about the parameters surrounding the DACA program. They just know that there is a program about to be closed that could allow for over a million people to be put onto a pathway to American citizenship.
The issue still remains. With the status quo of “catch and release,” these immigrants will still become a burden on the American taxpayers for some time to come.
When the caravan reaches the border, those seeking asylum will be taken into custody. They will give Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) their “information” and given a court date to appear for immigration proceedings. That court date could be two years out from the date in which they were originally processed. More often than not, they never show up for another immigration proceeding after they are initially processed.
This caravan of ill-intentioned, illegal immigrants highlights America’s dire need for a wall along its southern border. “A giant wall with a big beautiful door,” as the President would say, could fix this problem. A physical barrier would prevent people from walking over the border unobstructed and would allow for orderly immigration accommodations while giving the American people a better handle on their sovereignty.
